Travel Tim's Take

Udaipur, often called India's City of Lakes, turned out to be one of my favorite stops in Rajasthan. After experiencing the busy streets and sprawling attractions of Jaipur, I found Udaipur to be a refreshing change of pace. There's something special about this city, with its beautiful lakes, historic palaces, colorful markets, and a relaxed atmosphere that almost makes it feel like a lakeside resort town.

I started my exploration at the magnificent City Palace, a sprawling royal complex overlooking Lake Pichola. Construction began in the 16th century, and generations of rulers continued adding to it over the next 400 years. The palace is an impressive collection of courtyards, beautifully decorated rooms, intricate architecture, and wonderful viewpoints overlooking the lake and surrounding city. It's a great introduction to Udaipur's royal history and easily one of the city's must-see attractions.

Just a short walk from the palace is Jagdish Temple, a 17th-century Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. I was particularly impressed by the intricate stone carvings covering the temple, including rows of elephants, horses, and human figures. It's an active place of worship, and visiting gives you an opportunity to experience another side of Udaipur's culture and traditions.

One of the real pleasures of Udaipur is simply wandering through the Old City. The narrow streets are filled with shops selling traditional handicrafts, jewelry, clothing, textiles, and just about everything else imaginable. It's lively, colorful, and occasionally a little chaotic, especially with motorcycles and tuk-tuks squeezing through the crowded lanes. But that's part of the experience. You can easily spend hours exploring the side streets, stopping for a cup of chai, or discovering a small café or interesting shop.

Eventually, those winding streets lead to Gangaur Ghat, a beautiful spot along Lake Pichola where you can sit beside the water and enjoy the scenery. Across the lake, I also spent some time at Ambrai Ghat, which quickly became one of my favorite places in the city. The neighborhood is a little quieter, with charming cafés, restaurants, and some fantastic views looking back toward the City Palace. It's a wonderful place to escape the hustle and bustle of the Old City and just enjoy the surroundings.

Another highlight of my visit was taking a boat cruise across Lake Pichola to Jag Mandir Island. The island is home to a beautiful historic palace with marble courtyards, gardens, and impressive stone elephant sculptures. It also has a fascinating connection to Mughal history, having once provided refuge to Prince Khurram, who later became Emperor Shah Jahan, the builder of the Taj Mahal. The boat ride itself is worth the experience, offering spectacular views of the City Palace and Udaipur's waterfront. If you can time your visit for the late afternoon, the warm light over the lake and palace makes for some particularly beautiful scenery.

What I enjoyed most about Udaipur was how accessible everything felt. Many of the city's main attractions are concentrated around the historic center, making it easy to explore on foot. You can spend the morning visiting palaces and temples, the afternoon wandering through markets, and the evening relaxing beside the lake with a good meal or a cup of chai.

I'd recommend allowing two or three days to explore Udaipur. There's plenty to keep you busy, but I think part of the charm is not feeling rushed. Take some time to wander, enjoy the waterfront, and soak up the atmosphere.

Udaipur was a wonderful addition to my Rajasthan travels and, personally, I enjoyed its relaxed atmosphere even more than Jaipur. If you're planning a trip through this part of India, I'd definitely recommend making room for the City of Lakes on your itinerary.

Udaipur City Palace

One of the highlights of my visit to Udaipur was exploring the magnificent City Palace, perched above the shores of Lake Pichola. Built over several centuries by the rulers of Mewar, this sprawling palace complex is a fascinating maze of ornate courtyards, colorful mosaics, intricate mirror work, and beautifully decorated rooms. As I wandered through its narrow passageways and grand halls, I was struck by the incredible craftsmanship and attention to detail. But perhaps my favorite part was the spectacular panoramic views overlooking Lake Pichola, the surrounding hills, and Udaipur's picturesque old city. It's easy to see why Udaipur has earned the nickname "City of Lakes."

Jagdish Temple

Just a short walk from Udaipur's City Palace, I visited the beautiful Jagdish Temple, one of the city's most important Hindu temples. Built in 1651 and dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the temple is an impressive example of traditional Indo-Aryan architecture, featuring intricately carved stone pillars, elaborate sculptures, and a towering spire. After climbing the steep steps to the entrance, I was greeted by the sounds of chanting and the atmosphere of an active place of worship. What impressed me most was the incredible detail of the stone carvings and the way this centuries-old temple remains such an important part of everyday life in Udaipur.

Traditional Rajasthani folk dance and puppet show at Bagore Ki Haveli

One of the most entertaining experiences I had in Udaipur was attending the traditional Rajasthani folk dance and puppet show at Bagore Ki Haveli, a historic mansion overlooking Lake Pichola. The evening performance, known as Dharohar, featured colorful costumes, lively music, traditional dances, and some impressive displays of balance and skill. The highlight for me was watching a performer balance an incredible stack of pots on her head while dancing! Held in the haveli's atmospheric courtyard, the show was a wonderful introduction to Rajasthan's rich cultural traditions and a great way to spend an evening in Udaipur.
