Jaisalmer Fort (Sonar Quila)
One of the most remarkable things about Jaisalmer Fort is that it's still a living fortress, with families, shops, temples, and hotels operating within its ancient walls. Built in 1156, the fort rises above the desert city in beautiful golden sandstone. Wandering through its narrow streets feels like stepping back in time, and the views overlooking Jaisalmer are spectacular.
Jain Temples of Jaisalmer Fort
Tucked inside Jaisalmer Fort is a remarkable collection of Jain temples dating primarily from the 12th through 16th centuries. The intricate sandstone carvings, detailed pillars, and beautifully sculpted ceilings are extraordinary. These temples are among the most impressive architectural treasures inside the fort and offer a fascinating look at the region's religious history.
Patwon Ki Haveli
Patwon Ki Haveli is one of Jaisalmer's most impressive architectural landmarks. This collection of five beautifully decorated mansions was built by a wealthy merchant family beginning in the early 19th century. The elaborate sandstone carvings, ornate balconies, and detailed windows are incredible examples of the craftsmanship that made Jaisalmer famous.
Nathmal Ki Haveli
Built in the late 19th century, Nathmal Ki Haveli is another beautiful example of Jaisalmer's traditional architecture. Its facade features incredibly detailed sandstone carvings, decorative balconies, and two stone elephants near the entrance. Interestingly, the two sides were created by different craftsmen, giving the building subtle differences that make it especially unique.
